What is MIA Femtech Breast Implant?
The incision is hidden (usually in the armpit), so there are no scars on the breast itself.
Mia Femtech (or Mia® Breast Preservation / Harmonisation) is a minimally invasive breast augmentation/enhancement method.
The aim is to increase breast volume by about 1-2 cup sizes, while preserving breast tissue and minimizing trauma.
It is done without general anesthesia in many cases; local anesthesia or sedation is used instead.
How the Procedure Works
Here are typical steps of the MIA breast harmonization procedure:
| Step | What Happens |
|---|---|
| Preparation | Patient consultation, measurements, selecting implant type; local anesthesia + sedation. |
| Creating space | A “dilatation balloon” is used to gently separate breast gland tissue from the pectoral muscle, creating a pocket for the implant without cutting breast tissue. |
| Implant insertion | A flexible injectable implant is inserted via the armpit incision through a device/injector. The implant is placed in front of the muscle (subglandular). |
| Scar & incision | Small incision (~2-3 cm) in the armpit; no incisions on the breast itself. |
| Duration & recovery | The actual surgery part is short (about 15 minutes in many instances). Total clinic time may be 90 minutes including prep and recovery. Fast return to daily activities (same day or next day in many cases). |
Advantages
- Minimally invasive: less cutting, less tissue damage.
- Quicker recovery: many patients resume normal life sooner than with traditional augmentation.
- Natural look & feel: because of flexible implants, subglandular placement, and preserving breast tissue.
- Less visible scarring: only underarm incision, no visible scars on breast.
- Less use of general anesthesia: reduced risks associated with full anesthesia.
Limitations & Risks
- Increase in volume is modest: 1-2 cup sizes; not meant for someone wanting a large or dramatic change.
- Not suitable for severe sagging (ptosis) or cases where a lift (mastopexy) is needed.
- Because the method is relatively new, long-term data (for example for complications like capsular contracture, implant shifting, rupture, etc.) is more limited than for traditional implants.
- Visible scar potential: although the incision is under the arm, it may be visible depending on clothing or personal healing.
- Effects on breast imaging (mammograms etc.) need consideration; although the marketing says it does not interfere, medical oversight is necessary.
Who It’s Best For
MIA breast harmonization tends to be a good option if you:
- Want a subtle, natural increase rather than a dramatic transformation.
- Have enough breast tissue already so that subglandular implants look good and natural.
- Do not need a breast lift or correction of severe sagging.
- Prefer shorter recovery, less invasive surgery, and minimal anesthesia.
Important Things to Clarify if You’re Considering It
- Exactly what implant material is used (type of silicone, biocompatibility).
- How long the implant is expected to last, and what happens if there are complications.
- How the implant and procedure will affect mammograms / breast health screening.
- The level of experience of the surgeon with this specific technique.
- Cost: often more expensive per “cup size increase” compared to traditional implants, especially given novelty.
